Between 1979 to 1992 Ghana witnessed a reign of terror and brutalities under the regime of the AFRC and PNDC which was led by a young charismatic soldier called Jerry John Rawlings.
It was not easy to even preach openly and condemn the regime for their atrocities but one voice stood tall, that of evangelist Francis Akwesi Amoako. He was not scared to die for speaking the truth.
He even prophesied that the feared chairman will one day give his life to Christ Jesus.
This was also the era of fetishism in Ghana. The military regime of the day involved traditionalists in National prayer for Special occasions.
There was nothing like “Christian Prayer” offered for the Nation.
Meanwhile evangelist Francis Amoako was always praying for Ghana for redemption. He could dedicate a whole service on prayer for Ghana since things were very bad.
The military counsel under Rawlings upheld the likes of Osorfo Komfour Damoah (a Catholic Apostate who was now a Fetish Priest and was doing the unthinkable by calling himself “Osorfo Komfour” – The Pastor who is also a Fetish Priest.
The Reverend Father Dr. Vincent Kwabena Damuah from Asankrangua was a Catholic priest, theologian and politician in Ghana.
He was a member of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) government and was also the founder of the Afrikania Mission.
Dr. Dumuah received a Ph.D. in African Studies from Howard University in 1971.
He was the first Ghanaian Catholic priest who diverted back to practice the African traditional religion and help in writing the first African Scriptures called EDU.
He formed the African religious group called the Afrikian Mission which is widely based in South Africa, he championed the Africa Spiritual emancipation.
Rev. Damuah was detained during the Nkrumah era.
This was for criticising the Convention People’s Party government for the deportation of Bishop Reginald Richard Roseveare, the then Anglican Bishop of Accra.
He was released following the personal intervention of Archbishop John Kodwo Amissah, Catholic Archbishop of Cape Coast.
During the four month rule of the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) in 1979, he was on record to have supported the executions, which included three former heads of state of Ghana, although the Christian Council of Ghana opposed those killings.
Damoah openly supported the executions.
Sorfo Okomfour Damuah was appointed a member of the PNDC on 2 January 1982.
This led to his suspension by the Catholic Church from his priestly duties.
He however resigned from the military government by late 1982.
On August 1992 He died in a ghastly grisly accident two years after the death of evangelist Francis Amoako) , Nana Drobo (a popular fetish priest who declared to have found the cure for HIV/AIDS at that time but died mysteriously) and the late Kofi Ameve, one of the successors of Damoah at the AFRIKANNIA MISSION church (they believed witchcraft was a positive thing and infused traditional beliefs with Bible Principles)
These were the people who had access to speak on Radio and Television to talk to people about their beliefs.
Okomfo Damoah especially hated the evangelist and was open about it.
According to intelligence gathered in those days, evangelist Francis Amoako became a target of the PNDC because elements in it disliked him, especially Damoah.
So a clandestine plot was hatched to kill him but it was made to make it appear as an accident.
In the late 1980s the popularity of Francis Amoako was so great that even Foreigners (together with Ghanaians abroad) wanted to hear him speak so he was invited to attend a program at Israel.
Now the problem was how to get a Visa.
He was referred to the Castle (head of presidency in Ghana) to process it.
So the revered evangelist was introduced to a woman who had links with the Castle to help him secure it. (This was the same woman who called him to come for his Visa on the very day he was crushed to Death whiles on his way to get it)
Together with the woman they went to the Castle to meet the person who was in charge. They met a soldier who stayed:
” Me I don’t do Visa oooo I dey kill…”
Finally they got help and he was told he will be called when it is ready.
After several months there was silence but the evangelist was not bothered as he continued with his work as a preacher.
On March 1990, a powerful crusade was happening at Takoradi and the evangelist was the main speaker (the Tagoe Sisters were with him on ministration).
It was during the crusade that he was told to come for his Visa at Accra immediately on phone.
The evangelist who operated in all the 5 fold Ministry of the Holy spirit was a powerful Prophet too and foresaw his ill-fated destiny ahead of time as he usually told his congregants:
“Don’t mind for Taadi” “Don’t mind for Taadi!”
Which meant: “don’t be bothered about the events of Takoradi”.
He knew he was going to die! But was comforting his church members.
On that fateful day, 26th March 1990, Rev. Francis decided to drive his own car (Salifu Alhassan was his Driver) and come to Accra for his Visa. However he wanted the Tagoe Sisters to go with him.
According to the twins, when they got to Winneba junction, which was then a bushy curve, they saw an armored military vehicle coming at them at top speed, it moved to their lane!
By the time they could say Jack Robinson! The military vehicle has climbed theirs and crushed them underneath.
The twins saw him breath his last when he released a deep breath and died. The ladies were also badly hurt and found themselves at the Winneba Hospital.
According to eyewitness, a military helicopter suddenly appeared to pick the occupants of the armored vehicle leaving the evangelists and the twins to their fate!
At the hospital there was a supernatural encouter according to Panyin (one of the twins). She said she use to see an unknown man who was always standing close to their hospital bed.
When she started asking people about that person, he vanished and was never seen again.
Later it was revealed through prayer it was an Angel of the Lord.
After the accident, no Official investigation were made and the gruesome accident case was “killed”.
To support the above narrative, a GNA report has corroborated its truthfulness
According to the GNA report, Rev Amoako, founder and first General Overseer of the Resurrection Power and Living Bread Ministries International, died on March 26, 1990, in a mysterious motor accident on his way from Takoradi to Accra when a heavy Military vehicle crashed into his car, killing him instantly.
He was traveling together with the talented gospel music duo, Tagoe Sisters, who survived with various degrees of injuries.
The unfortunate incident was allegedly orchestrated by some elements within the military at the time, who loathed Rev. Amoako’s outspoken nature and avowed principle of rebuking all ungodly behaviour in all national, political and social spheres.
The surviving occupants of the Military truck were airlifted by a military helicopter to Accra, leaving behind the occupants of Rev. Amoako’s car.
Speaking to Abeiku Santana on UTV’s Atuu show on September 2019,Founder and General Overseer of Alive Chapel International, Archbishop Elisah Salifu Amoako, has revealed that then Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC)government knew something about the late Evangelist’s death, Ghanaweb monitored.
“There’s a mystery there. If God permits, how he died, who called him to come to Accra.
That particular time he drove at dawn too, there is a secret there too. If you put the bit and pieces together, you will know the government knew something about his death.
I can say it because no one knew Pastor Amoako very well than I did…I was staying with him so I knew everything that was going on,” he confidently told Abeiku Santana.
Archbishop Salifu, who was then a Moslem but converted to be a Christian was trained by the late Evangelist.
Dr Lawrence Tetteh, Pastor Kodua accused:
In 2003, the Daily Heritage reported that Dr Lawrence Tetteh and one Pastor Kwabena Kodua were alleged hired killers of the PNDC.
The accusation was by one petitioner named Mr Eric Gyimah, brother of the late Evangelist, at the National Reconciliation Commission (NRC) hearing at Kumasi.
According to the petitioner, Dr. Tetteh and Pastor Kodua confessed that they were sent by the PNDC to eliminate Pastor Amoako, who was the founder of the Resurrection Power Ministry.
According to Gyimah two people went to the church in Accra and confessed to his brother that they had been sent to eliminate him.
However, in a rebuttal report by GNA on October 8, 2003, Dr Tetteh and Pastor Kodua denied they were contracted by the erstwhile PNDC to murder Akwasi Amoako, a Kumasi-based evangelist, and critic of the regime.
“We have in no way confessed to anyone in private or public of being party to a plot, scheme or conspiracy to eliminate the late Evangelist Amoako or any other person at any point in time in our lives.
We wish to categorically assert that the allegation is totally unfounded, fallacious and mischievous,” Dr Tetteh is quoted to have said at the press conference.
But in all we give praise to God! Whether in Death or in Life, Victory belongs to the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Fire of the Legendary evangelist still burns in Christiandom! Many pastors and musicians in Ghana were mentored by him.
Some of them were: YABS (Yaw Agyemang Benjamin), Daughters of Glorious Jesus, Mary Ghansah and the Tagoe Sisters. Infact the list is endless!
He impacted lives in Ghana.
May he continue to rest in peace till we all meet at the Resurrection of the Dead.
